State of the Profession

Time: Tuesday 8:10am - 9:00am Credits: 1 AA

The Collegiate Accounting Symposium's opening session will highlight the most critical issues facing the CPA profession, both in Florida and across the country. We’ll touch on the current technology landscape, talent & growth and more.

Session Block 1

Time: Tuesday 9:10am - 11:00am Credits: 1 TB,1 AA

9:10am-10:00am - Data Analytics Overview - 1 AA -- The session includes an overview of accounting analytics, approaching client data with an analytics mindset, profiling data, and current accounting analytics software. Participants will gain a better insight into how accounting professionals can apply accounting analytics to client engagements and increase value the profession delivers to clients. 

10:10am-11:00am - Understanding Beneficial Ownership and the Corporate Transparency Act - 1 AA -- Student's will learn about the problems created for financial investigators by using layered opaque shell companies to conceal money laundering transfers by true owners or "beneficial owners". Students will also learn about the recent federal Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) requirements and how the CTA helps solve some of the issues the beneficial ownership issue.

Time: Tuesday 11:10am - 1:20pm Credits: 1 TB

11:10am-12:00pm - Analysis of Cybersecurity Preparedness of FICPA Members - 1 TB -- CPAs are expected to have strong cybersecurity controls on their systems and data, but do they plan to use this knowledge to engage in cybersecurity consulting? We surveyed members of the Florida Institute of CPAs (FICPA) to find out. 

12:30pm-1:20pm - Fraud Investigation and Detecting Deception - 1 AA -- This course will provide an overview of the role of the accountant in a fraud investigation and highlight the importance of these skills in the marketplace. We will also cover strategies for gathering evidence in a fraud investigation, including the use of behavioral interviewing techniques to detect deception.

Time: Tuesday 1:30pm - 3:20pm Credits: 1 AA,1 BE

1:30pm-2:20pm - SOC Reports: Preparer Auditor and User Auditor Perspectives - 1 AA -- This course will cover the fundamentals of preparing and relying on SOC (System and Organization Control) reports. Gain insights into the different types of SOC reports and their practical relevance. Learn about SOC auditor skillsets and the process for conducting a SOC audit. Discuss when financial statement auditors request SOC reports and how they utilize them.

2:30pm-3:20pm - The Value of Human Services in an AI World - 1 BE -- This presentation provides a background on technological capabilities in general - and professional applications of technology to highly complex problems both inside and outside of accounting.

Time: Wednesday 8:10am - 10:00am Credits: 2 TB

8:10am-9:00am - Economic Update - 1 TB - Participants will be given an overview of current economic indicators at the national level plus for the state of Florida.  Explanations for how those data are created will also be provided.

9:10am-10:00am - Multi-state Tax Implications Due to Wayfair - 1 TB -- This course shows the attendee multi-state tax issues in which a proficiency must be mastered. Failing to recognize or understand these multi-state issues could lead to potential exposure.

Time: Wednesday 10:10am - 12:00pm Credits: 2 AA

10:10am-11:00am - Solving Financial Problems in Litigation -- CPAs are called upon by courts and parties to litigation to solve an array of problems.  CPAs utilize their unique knowledge and skill sets to assist the courts in determination of matters revolving economic damages, value of assets in lieu of dissolution and other related matters.  This session will educate attendees on the types of services CPAs provide to courts and parties in litigation while also discussing 'avenues' of expertise.

12:30pm-1:20pm - Private Equity Considerations for CPA Firms - 1 TB

1:30pm-2:20pm - Critical Problems in the Implementation of Estate & Gift Tax Planning Techniques - 1 AA -- In this session, we will review common estate planning techniques, real-life conflicts that can arise in the implementation of those techniques, planning alternatives that better address potential conflicts, and the tension between the client's tax objectives and general desire for family harmony.

2:30pm-3:20pm - A Primer on Generative AI - 1 TB -- Introduction to generative AI and generative AI adjacent technologies like reasoning engines, the importance of organizational technology governance, implementation ideas and strategies for emerging technologies, and orientations to the user interfaces of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s BARD and Microsoft’s Bing Chat as well as use case demonstrations of each.
