Maria (Mia) Thomas, CPA, CGMA

Mia Thomas, CPA, CGMA is the Director of Learning - Curriculum Development for the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA). She coordinates course curriculum on technical, behavioral, ethics and work/life skills..

Prior to joining the FICPA, Mia provided accounting, tax, consulting and business plan services for closely held businesses, not-for-profit associations, physicians, and domestic and international individuals and companies at her firm, Mia A. Thomas, P.A. in Orlando, Florida. In addition, she consulted for non-profit boards on accounting and board governance.

Mia’s professional involvement has been Past Council member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Past Chair of Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA), Past President of FICPA Scholarship Foundation, Past Chair FICPA Women’s Leadership Committee, Past Chair CPA/PAC, Past Legislative Chair CFC,  Past President of the FICPA Central Florida Chapter. 

She is a frequent speaker for organizations on topics ranging from Florida Ethics, Preparing Meaningful Financial Reports, Income Taxes and Planning, International Tax Issues - Inbound, Financial Accountability & Strategic Planning, & Business Etiquette and Protocol.

Mia was awarded as one of the twenty five “Most Powerful Women in Accounting” in the United States by the CPA Practice Advisor in their inaugural award in 2012.  She was nominated for her leadership and initiatives in the accounting profession.

She currently serves on the following boards and committees: Member of Florida Society of Association Executives (FSAE), Trustee-Emeritus for FICPA Educational Foundation. In 2016, the Mia A. Thomas Endowment was established with the FICPA Scholarship Foundation. Past awards include - During her tenure as Accounting Careers Chair, her committee was awarded a grant with the AICPA to embark on the FICPA Minority Residency Program (MSRP). She was awarded the FICPA "President's Award" in 2010, the FICPA 2002 “Outstanding CPA in Public Service” award, and the FICPA 2003-2004 and 2005-2006 “Accounting for Success Speaker of the Year” award.  As President of the FICPA CFC for 2005-2006, her chapter was awarded the “Chapter Excellence Award” and the “PAC Chapter Challenge Award”. In 1989 she began the FICPA Central Florida Chapter Accounting Field Day which connects University Students and firm visits with Public Accounting firms for the day. That event is now replicated throughout the State of Florida. She has previously served on the AICPA Minority Initiatives Committee and is featured on the AICPA Start Here Go Places recruitment video.

She is the U.S. Chair of the Board for Inua Partners In Hope, a ministry in Kenya for Orphans and Vulnerable Youth, Finance for National House of Hope, Board member of House of Hope Orlando, President for Winter Park High School Theatre Boosters, and Ticket Co-Chair for Winter Park High School Chorus Boosters.
